Cainan is a firecracker of mean-spirited wit and raw talent. She's always been good at everything she tries; she's never really experienced what it's like to fail at something. She's the coolest girl in town, and she knows it. This can make her a bit of a bully, but her best friend Ronan and her sister Naia put up with her because they know she's a good person even if she's got an attitude and an ego and a smart mouth. However, when Cainan is seduced by dark powers, she becomes the villain of the story. She believes that Ronan and Naia will join her, follow her as they always have, but they both refuse. This sends Cainan into a spiral, as she's never been rejected before. She seeks out Kieran, a professional assassin who she hires to help her in her cause, but a hired hand isn't the same thing as a friend. Her loneliness and hurt drive her to the edge, as the dark powers she accepted into her body destroy her from within.

Cainan finds Emris really weird and annoying, but late in the story she's fallen so far into the pit of loneliness and despair that when she kidnaps Emris to hold him for ransom, she ends up bonding with him like a close friend out of sheer desperation.
